Sitting pretty — Designed for the lobbies of New York City's Time-Life Building, the Eames Walnut Stools – or “perchers,” as Charles and Ray Eames called them – serve equally well as elegant side tables or sturdy overflow seating.
Far-flung origins
Originally designed for the lobbies of the Time-Life Building at New York City’s Rockefeller Center, the Eames Walnut Stools (1960) were inspired by a wooden African seat Ray Eames had purchased. She led their design, drawing upon her training in sculpture to create multiple variations. The Eameses then had the profiles lathed into blocks of solid walnut, similarly to how one would make turned legs for chairs and tables. The duo settled on three shapes, which accompanied in the lobbies Eames Executive Chairs (also developed for the projects) and large murals by Josef Albers and Fritz Glarner. The Eameses were so enamored with the stools, in fact, that they used the pieces—which they called “perchers”—throughout their Pacific Palisades home.
Rule of three.
Reducing seating to its minimal elements, the stools also can be used side tables. Both ends of the pieces are concave, with either side “top.” The pieces are manufactured in sections, with the ends first and then the middle; a wooden dowel threads through the center of the components, keeping them connected and secure. All three stools share the same dimensions. These are the authentic Eames Walnut Stools by Herman Miller.
